Meet the Animals: 1 hour, All Grades Learn where Ohio's native animals live, what they eat, how they interact with other animals and more fun facts. You'll even get to handle them! (A,C,D,F,G,J,M) Terrific Turtles: 1 or 2 hours, K-3rd Turtles! Turtles! Turtles! Interact with native turtle species while learning where these animals came from, how they live and why they are special. (A,C,D,F,G,J,M) Spring Amphibians: 2 hours, 3rd-12th Toads, frogs and salamanders, oh my!! Learn to identify these amazing creatures through physical characteristics, calls and hands-on discovery in the classroom and outdoors. (A-G,J,M) Happy Herps: 2 hours, 4th-8th Find out the similarities and differences between reptiles and amphibians. Discover how these wonderful animals live and where they are found. See many up close and then go looking for ones that live in our backyard! (D-H) Mammals: 2 hours, K-8th If it has hair, produces milk and has live birth, it's a mammal. So what animals does this include? Which species can be found in Ohio? Come and learn about mammals by examining skulls and skins. (A-H) Home Tweet Home: 1 or 2 hours, K-8th Birds are amazing creatures. Discover the different types of nesting habitats and how birds build detailed nests using their beak and feet! Then make your own nest. (A,B,D,E,G,H) Beaks and Feet: 2 hours, All Grades Darwin noticed that different finches had different beaks. He wondered why. Find out for yourself in this program. Experiment with different beak shapes through a hands-on simulation. (A-O) Fossils: 1 hour, All Grades Brachiopods, horn corals, bryzoans and more. Find out what a fossil is, make one and then search for some in the ravine and caves of Indian Village. (A-I,J,M) Who's Who of Trees: 1 hour, All Grades Learn to identify tree species through hands-on exploration during a guided walk. Students will be introduced to tree identification keys and how to use them. (A-M) Habitat Trekking: 2 hours, All Grades Explore varying habitats and compare different species found in each. Discuss where these habitats occur and how they affect wildlife. (A-O) Night Hike: 1 or 2 hours, All Grades There is so much to see and do at night. Join us to learn about stars and nocturnal animals. Try experiments that can only occur at night. (A-D,G,J,M) Seasonal Saunter: 1 or 2 hours, All Grades Explore the special qualities of the season with a nature walk that includes hands-on discovery. (A,B,D,G,J,M) Owls: 1 or 2 hours, K-8th Find out about these silent raptors and their adaptations that make them successful hunters. Dissect an owl pellet to figure out what they eat. Learn their calls to help identify these hard to see nocturnal birds. (A-I) Forest Success: 2 - 6 hours, 6th-12th Explore what forest succession is and how each stage differs in species and diversity. Students create an experiment to figure out which stage contains the most diversity. Identification, recording, analysis and creative thinking are essential to this class! (G-O) Bug Out!: 1 or 2 hours, K-6th What makes an insect an insect? Where can they be found? What do they eat? Is a spider an insect? These questions and more will be answered through an interactive search and discussion about the most numerous members of the animal kingdom. (A-H) Stream Stomp/Pond Probe: 1 or 2 hours, All Grades Discover what lives in a pond or stream. Learn how these ecosystems function and how to preserve these precious resources. Sampling methods and equipment will be discussed and practiced. (A-O) How many Bears are in the Woods?: 2 hours, 5th-9th Black Bears were once all over Ohio. Discover where they are today, how they live and what they eat. Find out how hard it is to be a bear by playing a simulation where fun and a little math will determine if you survive. (G-O) Dam it!: 2 hours, K-8th Beavers are the second-most destructive animals out there. They can change their environment within one evening. Learn all about the beaver's amazing life. Build a dam just like they do! (A,B,D,G) Getting Ready for Winter: 1 or 2 hours, All grades Learn how different animals get ready for the cold. Discover which mammals truly hibernate and conduct an experiment to test the effects of hibernation. (A-O) Dirty H2O: 2 hours, 4th -12th Can you save a pond from pollution? Learn about water pollution and the cleanup procedure. Each student will have a pond to try to keep clean. (D-O) Tracks: 1 or 2 hours, K-8th Learn what signs animals leave behind. (Hint: they leave more than just tracks!) Make a track and play a game that will make you the best tracker in town. (A-H) All programs are based on Ohio's Curriculum Standards. Afterschool Program Series This program meets once a week for six weeks and will be tailored to meet your needs. It can include many different environmental education programs; adventure recreation activities such as pontoon boat rides, canoeing, archery and fishing; or a combination of education and recreation.
